Simply fantastic: Always along the water

On a journey of discovery: South Tyrol's waterways for hiking enthusiasts

Before we start, the Waalwege have nothing to do with huge sea creatures! But these charming hiking trails in South Tyrol still have a close connection to water. Originally created to supply the fields with water, they run along narrow canals and are still maintained today by the so-called “Waalern”.

A particularly popular destination is the Meran Waalrunde. Stretching an impressive 80 km, this connects eleven irrigation channels and takes you through the picturesque landscape around the Meran Basin. The Schenner Waalweg, which takes you from the Masul Gorge into the Naiftal, is particularly romantic. The Marlinger, Algund and Maiser Waalweg are also highly recommended for unforgettable hikes.

For the more adventurous, there is the historic Waalweg to the 18th century Juval Castle. This path winds its way under the shade of chestnut trees and sun-drenched slopes to the impressive castle, which houses one of the most interesting Messner Mountain Museums. Also well worth a trip is the Tscharser Schnalswaal from Galsaun to Juval, which offers exciting views and an original "Waalerhütte" over a distance of 11 kilometres.

The irrigation channels are extremely popular with South Tyroleans and are ideal for leisurely walks, particularly the whole family! Since they are mostly flat and not too steep along sunny slopes, they are accessible at all times of the year. Strolling along the rippling water, every excursion becomes a time for contemplation and reflection. Leisure hikers in particular will find the perfect conditions here to enjoy nature to the fullest and admire the magnificent views of the surrounding mountain landscape. Pack your hiking boots and discover the irrigation channels. Be prepared  for an unforgettable adventure!
